Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Westhofener Riesling Trocken is sourced entirely from grand cru vineyards (predominantly Morstein but also Brunnenhäuschen) and is a concentrated, intense and juicy wine with a tight mineral structure. Tasted at the domaine in March 2020.

Features

Description

Wittmann Westhofener Riesling Trocken reflects the rich history and tradition of the vineyards of the Rheinhessen region, being an ambassador of the quality and distinctive character of its place of origin. Meticulous attention to the vineyard throughout the year, together with low yields and a rigorous selection of the grapes by hand, lay the foundations for exceptional wine quality. The winemaking of this wine follows a careful process, from gentle handling of the grapes and must to traditional vinification. An outstanding feature is that these wines are fermented mostly in traditional oak barrels.

Winemaking

To make Westhofener Riesling, in addition to grapes from the specific plots classified VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN® Morstein and Brunnenhäuschen, grapes from adjacent vineyards are used. These are classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. The wine reflects the typical Westhofen limestone minerality, offering a profile of high fruit ripeness. The wines are dense and mineral, showing the potential of the main Westhofen regions. The soils of the VDP.ERSTEN LAGEN® and VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN® in Westhofen are dominated by heavy clays with limestone encrustations in the upper layer, while the subsoil is dominated by water-bearing limestone rock layers.

Taste

Wittmann Westhofener Riesling has a serious concentration of ripe fruit with hints of peach, accompanied by a great finesse that makes it stand out in its category. As you savour it, it glides across the palate with impressive mineral drive, maintaining impeccable balance. The finish is lingering, with an explosion of chalky minerality and a long-lasting saline finish that undoubtedly shows its origin.
