The dry, unfortified 2009 Sereno is a modern interpretation of the traditional rancio wines of the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The grapes are harvested very late, when they start raisining and then fermented dry to 15.5% alcohol. This is really a solera wine started in 2009. The barrels are kept outside providing greater oxidation and concentration, providing the wine its rancio character. The nose shows some volatile notes of nail polish and bruised apples. Once you get used to that you find the dry apricots showing much younger (even fresh fruit) than the old rancios from the zone, with an oxidative whiff. The palate is dry and sharp, making it a little hard to match with food, as it would not go with desserts, rather as an aperitif or simply with some nuts. 1,500 bottles.
