Xarel.lo is first mentioned in Sitges, a village in the Penedés region. The name comes from the Italian Word chiarello, which means “claret”, a term used originally to refer to a light coloured red wine.
Xarel.lo clusters are packed and the berries are middle sized and thick skinned. It has also a middle budding and ripening. Xarel.lo vineyard is well adapted to most of the soils, is prone to suffer millerandage and, consequently, is fruitful as long as the flowering climate is good. It is also sensitive to powdery mildew and downy mildew, but resistant to botrytis cinerea.
Xarel.lo variety reaches its highest quality in Cataluña, and its use is absolutely recommendatory for the production of Cava sparkling wines and white wines due to its good ageing as long as the structure, acidity, density and sugar content refers.
