The designation of origin Montsant as it is know today has few years of history; however there is a long-held winemaking tradition. The production area of Montsant wines is placed in the Priorat district of Tarragona province and encompasses a total of 16 municipalities belonging to Baix Priorat, a small part of Alt Priorat and the Ribera d'Ebre area. It enjoys Mediterranean climate, with some continental influences as a result of the mountain ranges that surround the zone and isolate it from the sea but cannot screen out the moisture laden winds. Temperature changes from day to night are drastic. Vineyards are planted between 200 to 700 metres above sea level on calcareous soils of granitic or slate type, poor in organic matter.
