Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The first vintage under the AXA Millesime regime, but predating Christian Seely’s tenure, the 1994 Quinta do Noval Vintage has a conservative bouquet that is quite earthy with hints of game and leather. It has moderate definition, but conservative, and is missing the exuberance of its Nacional counterpart. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity and powdery tannins. There are touches of black pepper and game interwoven into the black fruit, while later burnt toast and tobacco surface. But the Noval ’94 does not “fly” like the Nacional, and instead settles for being an improvement on its nadir during the 1980s rather than exploiting that great Douro vintage. This drank so well until a few years ago, but now it looks to be in decline. Drink now-2018. Tasted January 2014.

Features

Description

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port stands out for the purity of its fruit and a fine, delicate quality, characteristics that are typical of the wines from this estate. This purity and delicacy find their most remarkable and lasting expression in the Vintage Ports. The essence of this wine is based on balance, harmony, finesse and elegance. The decision to declare a Vintage Port is not taken lightly; it is only declared when it is certain that the year has produced a blend, however small, worthy of bearing the name Quinta do Noval Vintage Port.

Winemaking

The grape varieties used in this wine are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousón and Tinta Roriz. Vinification is a traditional process in which the grapes are trodden by foot to obtain the must. They are then macerated in the lagares, the Quinta's traditional stone vats, to ensure the best possible extraction of aromas, colour and tannins during fermentation. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for 18 months in wooden barrels in the Quinta's air-conditioned cellars, located in the demarcated Douro Valley region, before bottling.

Taste

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is characterised by a marked stylistic individuality, reflecting the particular conditions of each vintage. The nose is very elegant and balanced, showing pure floral notes and black fruit aromas. All in all, the wine is intensely aromatic, with dense, firm and fine tannins.
