Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Macán has moderate alcohol (14%) and more freshness (pH 3.69), reflecting a cooler and rainier year that forced them to fine-tune the sorting and selection of the grapes, which fermented with selected yeasts. The élevage was in barrel (55%) and larger foudres for 16 months. 2018 was quite different from 2019, as it was cooler and rainier. The wine is serious and harmonious, which was a challenge, and winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga told me that they had to be very careful and sort and select the grapes. It's textured and elegant, a style that follows the path of the 2016; it's elegant but with depth, managing the élevage in foudre better, which was a learning process they started in 2016. 74,570 bottles, 2557 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in September 2020.

Winemaking
Aged for 17 months in French oak barrels (70% new ones). Finally it stays a minimum of 2 years on bottle before commercialization.
Description
Macán is a single varietal Tempranillo red wine. It is the first wine produced by the new partnership between Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega-Sicilia in La Rioja, specifically in San Vicente. In fact, the name of this wine, like that of their second wine, derives from the vernacular term by which the inhabitants of San Vicente de la Sonsierra are known.
Winemaking
Macán wine is made from grapes from vineyards over 30 years old that are harvested with great care to ensure the integrity of the clusters, which is why the wine is so exquisite!
After alcoholic fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 70% of the time and in barrels for the remaining 30%. The wine then begins aging for 15 months, mainly in new barrels of fine-grained, extra-fine French wood, with a smaller portion of the wine stored in barrels that have been used for one year.
Taste
Firm and robust in its attack, it has a palate with an evident but not overwhelming tannic character. It is a wine with density, but at the same time fresh, precise and deep.
Modern and powerful
Macán is a new and highly personal vision of the excellent expression and quality of DOCa Rioja wines. It represents a dedication to refinement, grace, complexity and power. It is the star wine of Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, a 2004 collaboration between Tempos Vega Sicilia and Compañía Vinícola Edmond de Rothschild.
