Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Las Umbrías is completely unusual. For a start, it's cloudy. They decided to bottle it like that, without racking, and the nose feels like a Poulsard from the Jura produced in Chambolle-Musigny, wild, lively and expressive. It has notes of red fruit, hints of tangerine and flowers. It's cold, ethereal, delicate, with almost unnoticeable tannins, and it's full of crystalline energy, quartz and iron. This is a vineyard that marks the vintages like no other. In great vintages, it has great finesse; and in warmer years, it suffers more. This is not a vintage for all consumers, as the wine is quite different from previous years, with a contained 13.5% alcohol and a vibrant and characterful palate. Magical. A total of 1,490 bottles were filled in March 2023, unfiltered and unfined, as direct as possible from the tank, where it was racked directly from the foudre.

Features

Description

Las Umbrías is an exceptional wine that reflects mastery and dedication in its production. Hailing from the Vinos de Madrid appellation, this wine stands out for its unique variety, Garnacha, grown in vineyards with an average age of 65 years. The location of these vineyards at altitudes of approximately 1000 metres, along with sandy granite and clay soils, contributes significantly to the wine's distinctive characteristics.

Winemaking

The winemaking of Las Umbrías is a carefully orchestrated process. The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open vats. This process includes a maceration that lasts between 40 and 60 days, which allows for optimal extraction of flavours and tannins. Subsequently, the wine is aged for 14 months in a 10-12HL French oak vat. This ageing method not only respects tradition, but also enhances the natural qualities of the Garnacha.

Taste

Las Umbrías is a true representation of its terroir. Despite its pale, deceptively delicate colour, the wine reveals a surprising complexity on the nose and palate. Subtle red fruit aromas and flavours are skilfully balanced by fine tannins and mineral acidity. This balance is enhanced by small patches of clay in the granitic soil, giving the wine added elegance and posture. The combination of these elements results in a wine that is not only deeply aromatic and savoury, but also remarkably elegant and refined.
