Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken 'GG' offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle. Tasted in Wiesbaden, August 2019.

Features

Description

Christmann Idig Riesling GG comes from the prestigious Königsbach region. This wine is the result of the passion and dedication of the Christmann winery, which has cultivated and perfected its craft over the years.

Winemaking

Idig stands out for being grown in one of the most renowned locations in the region, being practically a monopoly of the winery. This particularity gives the wine a unique and distinctive identity. The vineyard sits on a rocky limestone massif, formed from limestone deposits. The surface soil, known as terra fusca, originated from lime and clay. This soil is rich and diverse, containing innumerable limestones and also some basalt.
In terms of winemaking, Idig Riesling benefits from selective and meticulous harvesting. Once harvested, the grapes undergo a natural fermentation process in oak vats, which contributes to the complexity and richness of the wine's flavour.

Taste

Christmann Idig Riesling GG is a sensory experience in itself. On tasting, pure, intense notes evoking chalk and iodine can be appreciated, complemented by nuances of ripe, well-concentrated fruit with hints of spice. On the palate, it is dense and savoury, with fine chalky tannins and notes of acidic lemon juice. This combination results in a dense, refined and persistently saline and tannic Idig. The presence of tannins and stimulating saline notes make it astringent and promising. At 12.5% alcohol, this wine is not only a delight to the palate, but also a promise of what the Christmann winery is capable of offering.
