Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Purists will adore the NV Extra Brut Grain d'Argile from Barrat-Masson, an unerringly precise wine that opens in the glass with notes of citrus oil, oyster liquor, green almonds and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and incisive, built around a rapier-like line of ripe but racy acids and displays a fine mousse, excellent intensity and a long, bone-dry and delicately saline finish. This release was disgorged in May 2017 with two grams per liter dosage, and it's based on the 2014 vintage with 20% reserve wine from the 2013 harvest. From organically farmed vineyards in the Sézannais, this cuvée contains 35% Pinot Noir and emphasizes the domaine's clay soils. The tensile, acid-driven style won't be for everyone, but I loved it.

Features

Description

Barrat Masson Grain d'Argile Extra Brut is a sparkling wine made from 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Noir. It comes from a terroir composed of 80% clay and limestone. The vines have an average age of 40 years, which brings a unique richness and complexity to the wine.

Winemaking

Barrat Masson Grain d'Argile Extra Brut is made from 80% wine from the year's harvest and 20% reserve wine. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts and no added sugar. The wine is aged for 9 months in oak barrels (75%) and stainless steel tanks (25%). Finally, the wine rests with its lees in the bottle, for the second fermentation and the mousse, for 30 months. During the bottling phase, the wine is not filtered and no sugar is added (no expedition liqueur).

Taste

Barrat Masson Grain d'Argile Extra Brut is extremely dry and mouth-filling with abundant notes of lemon and green apple. Over time, hints of almond and yeast emerge, leaving a lingering aftertaste. It has a beautiful golden colour and a very expressive nose with a lingering effervescence. It is a vinous champagne, with a mouth rich in dried fruit notes.
